The magnificent Zhenzhi Lecture Hall of Hebei Normal University echoed with splendid melodies on Jan 7, as a New Year’s concert brought students and local residents a classical symphony performance celebrating the coming new year.
Co-organized by the Culture Department and Education Department of Hebei province, the Baoding government and Hebei Normal University, the concert was hosted by the Baoding Zhili Grand Theater, and aimed to welcome the arrival of the new year. The concert was also organized to boost culture communications between Hebei province and countries in Central and Eastern Europe, as the concert headed off a series of activities themed “culture season for Central and Eastern European countries”.
As a positive response to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, Hebei province successfully invited art troupes from over 20 countries in Central and Eastern Europe to perform in Hebei. The exchange not only showcased the highest levels of musicianship for Hebei residents, but also displayed the charm of Hebei’s traditional culture to foreign guests, increasing the cultural communications and interaction.
Presented by the Baoding Symphony Orchestra, the first half of the concert began with the classical Chinese piece Ode to the Red Flag. Other pieces of music featuring Chinese traditional elements, and Central and Eastern European characteristics, were also performed. The cheerful melodies of the piano, violins and trumpets put the audience in a merry mood.

“It is of great significance for cultures lasting for thousands of years to communicate like this,” said Ouyang Wangjian, conductor of the Baoding Symphony Orchestra. He also explained that more compositions integrating Chinese elements with the western symphony should be created to push forward the cultural communications and help Chinese culture “go out to the world”.
